Hoaxes, Scams, and Data Manipulation

The first time that I encountered a scam that was intended for me was in my first year of high school. I got a text saying that I had an overdue toll that I need to pay or else my car’s registration would be suspended through the DMV. I knew it was fake because I don’t have a car, but car owners would know it was fake because there were no additional contacts about this – no mail or phone calls. It was also my first time hearing about this when this was supposed to be the “final notice”. The goal of this scam was to take my money and payment information by clicking on a fake link.

  1. This happened to me too! At first I kinda thought it was real because I had just been on vacation and traveled some toll roads with my rental car. But realized it was a scam. And then received about 10 more messages like this. Super annoying!

  2. Once, about two years ago, I received a phone message from someone pretending to be a Snohomish County Sheriff. His message claimed that I had missed a grand jury summons and to call him back. I called the number back and talked to the supposed police officer and with in two minutes I knew this was a scam by way he talked. Just to make sure, I stopped by the sheriffs office and asked an actual police officer. Once he heard the story, he confirmed it was a scam.
